ARTLIA's art prints are produced according to standardized paper and canvas formats.

Depending on the aspect ratio of the original artwork and the chosen format, it may happen that the edges of the image are slightly adjusted to achieve a harmonious overall effect and high print quality.

For canvas prints, the ARTLIA team ensures that the main motif is placed as fully as possible on the front side. The side frame areas are continued in color and style to match the original image.

This is a deliberate and common production step with which the ARTLIA team ensures the aesthetic quality of each artwork.

L’Angelus (The Angelus) – Jean-François Millet

Date: 1857–1859
Technique: Oil on canvas
Original size: approx. 55.5 × 66 cm
Location: Musée d'Orsay

Painting description

The Angelus is one of the best-known works of 19th-century French Realism. The painting depicts a farming couple in a harvested field at dusk. A basket and a wheelbarrow filled with potatoes stand between them. In the distance, a church tower rises against the vast sky.

The two figures have interrupted their work. With their heads bowed, they remain absorbed in prayer—listening to the Angelus bell, the traditional Catholic prayer recited in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. The scene is quiet, contemplative, and imbued with inner devotion.

Composition and proportion

Millet builds the composition around clear vertical axes:

  • the standing male figure
  • the upright pitchfork
  • the distant church tower

These verticals contrast with the field’s broad horizontal expanse. The low horizon gives the sky a strong presence—nearly half of the image area is devoted to it. This creates a calm, atmospheric effect that emphasizes the spiritual dimension.

The original measures approximately 55,5 × 66 cm, which gives an aspect ratio of approximately 1:1,19 corresponds.

A format of 41 × 51 cm (16″ × 20″) has a ratio of approximately 1:1.24, making it very close to the original. This size preserves the compositional balance particularly well—especially the relationship between the figures and the sky, as well as the vertical tension structure.

Light and color

Millet uses a muted, earthy palette:

  • ochre and brown tones in the ground
  • shades of gray and blue in the evening sky
  • dark, almost silhouetted figures

The twilight reduces detail and emphasizes the sculptural quality of the bodies. The figures appear less as individual portraits than as archetypal forms—representatives of a social class and a way of life.

Symbolism and interpretation

The painting appears simple, yet it carries several layers of meaning:

  1. Religious humility – An expression of rural piety.
  2. Labor and transience – The harvested field refers to cycles and finitude.
  3. Stillness in everyday life – A momentary interruption of physical labor through spiritual reflection.

Later artists such as Salvador Dalí interpreted the painting psychologically and saw hidden tensions in it. Historically, however, the work belongs in the context of Realism and the appreciation of peasant life.

Art-historical significance

The Angelus became an iconic image of the French rural population and the Barbizon school. It combines social observation with spiritual seriousness. In the late 19th century, reproductions spread far beyond France, giving the motif international recognition.
