Fantastic Beasts of Happiness and Harmony (Seosudo, 서수도)
The term Seosudo refers to a genre of painting from the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) that features animals with auspicious and mythical meanings. These creatures were believed to possess special spiritual power, allowing the paintings to be understood as visual expressions of wishes for happiness, long life, harmony, and protection.
A central characteristic of Seosudo painting is the depiction of animals together with their offspring. This composition symbolically represents family harmony and the desire for fertility and many descendants. Common motifs include the Qilin, a giraffe-like mythical creature symbolizing a peaceful and just order, and the Haetae, which was believed to possess moral judgment and protect against destructive forces such as fire. Auspicious fruits also appear, including the peach as a symbol of longevity and the Buddha's hand citron as a symbol of blessings and prosperity.
Seosudo was widely practiced both in the context of the royal court and in everyday culture. The depictions express the collective hopes of people during the Joseon era for a peaceful, orderly, and harmonious life through the form of fantastical beasts.
