What do we see in this artwork?

This painting printed on canvas is one of the Chochungdo (초충도, 草蟲圖). Chochungdo (pictures of grass and insects) are Korean folk paintings featuring a combination of grass, insects, amphibious lizards, and other elements, each with its own meaning. This is a nature painting whose meaning expresses wishes for a scholarly spirit, wealth, longevity, and fertility. It is a broad theme ranging from literary paintings to popular images and is recognized by all social classes.

Chochungdo mainly features cucumbers, pumpkins, grapes, eggplants, bellflowers, cockscombs, cherry blossoms, cones, poppies, wild herbs, hydrangeas, yellow and white chrysanthemums, twilight, wildflowers, frogs, toads, dragonflies, and bees. Grass and worms often appear in the immediate surroundings of butterflies, chicks, fireflies, cicadas, lizards, hedgehogs, bats, and weasels. Hwajodo consists of tall trees, flowers, birds, and so on, while Chochungdo is composed of small grasses, blossoms of perennial plants, and small insects that live in close relationship with one another.

An overview of the Chochungdo method presented in 『Gaejawonhwajeon, 개자원화전, 芥子園畵傳』 reads as follows: "To draw a grass insect, the lively movements of flying and running must be expressed well. The shape of the grass insect can be long, short, large, or small, and its color changes from time to time. In summer, when the grass and trees are growing, the insects should be green, and in autumn, when the grass and trees are colored, they should be dull. Grass insects are usually drawn with dots, and the spirit must appear first. While the heads are drawn first for grass insects, the wings are addressed first for butterflies. To make the flowers shine more colorfully, butterflies must be depicted in their surroundings. The wart is a small insect, yet it must be painted with dignity. Therefore, grass insects are very small creatures, but their form and spirit must be expressed sufficiently to bring out the meaning of excitement.”
